Just bought motorcycle have odometer question?victim of fraud?

I just bought a motorcycle and its a 94 honda magna 750.i was going to get a speed bike but this was alot cheaper and hauls *** still because its a v-4 engine.anyway, when i went to test drive it everything was fine,it ran perfect and had plenty of piwer.i fell in love with it because of power and comfort.but it was night when i drove it so i couldnt really see odometer, but i did see speedometer was broke wich they gave me the cable to fix it.but i noticed after i bought it that the miles written on the title is more than the miles that the bike odometer has on it,and the title was given over a year ago.does having a broken speedometer cable mess with the odometer? The odometer is tight under speedometer on same gauge, or am i a victim of odometer fraud? She said the speedometer just went out day before i bought it,and what i seen these ppl are pretty mechanically inclined, there garage had maybe 3 bikes but one had its engine pulled to be worked on.bike runs flawlessly though. Thanks

Yes the Odometer and Speedometer are run by the same cable. You are not a victim of fraud. You bought a "OLD", Cheap Motorcycle and had ample opportunity to check it out before purchase. If it runs well, enjoy it. Get the Speedo fixed so you do not get any speeding tickets. Good Luck

For a flawless runner you seem to be having several problems with it.

And you have broken several rules of bike buying – one is do not buy at night when you cannot see all the details of a bike.

It takes less than half an hour to replace a speedo cable – so why didn't these mechanically inclined people fix it? And why did they have one in stock?

Hope you checked the paperwork against the frame and engine numbers.

My CM400 has a replacement speedometer and odometer on it. ran it for 3 years without one, but students needed proper speedometer. title notes age over 10 years or 20 -(and little Rat is over 30 years old, 1981 made) and speedometer disclosure line is marked 'exempt/over age required'. 20year old decent runner, what state are you in? possible the odometer requirement is no longer required.

Possibly a replacement instrument has been fitted or it has been wound back. What you can do about it depends on your local legislation, how much the bike is worth, how much trouble you are prepared to go through and much time and possibly money. If this is a workshop then they may be persistently tampering with odos. It is too late for advice now, but when you hear the words, it just broke yesterday, that is a big fat juicy red flag, right there and you should have just Walked away.

Guessing that one of the first owners had a spill, broke the speedo and replaced it with a NEW one.

Might be something else but at this point WHO CARES? If the bike rides/runs good than it's just a different wind in your face.

That's an OLD bike. The mileage disclosure probably doesn't apply, depending on the state you live in.

As long as the DMV issues a title, no worries.

You are overthinking it. Get it registered, install the cable, and go have fun.
