Government says I still owe taxes when I payed them two months ago. Why?

I filed my taxes this year and owed the state exactly $480.00. I paid it just in time before April 15th. I made my first check and sent it out and it got the amount withdrawn from my account. I have proof of exactly $480.00 dollars being withdrawn from my account on that very same date.

But now (two months later) I received a letter saying that I still owe those $480.00 and a penalty and interest fee of $10!

My checking statement says the money was withdrawn.

Is there any way I can dispute it if I didn't take a picture of the check unfortunately!?

Or claim fraud in case it was cashed my someone else?

Show them the statement where it was taken. Most bank websites will allow you to see the check.

You could claim fraud, but you'd still owe the money.

Your bank either returned the canceled check to you or provided you with an image of both sides of the check. Print out a copy of that image (or photocopy the canceled check) and send that back to the state with a copy of the letter and a note explaining that you already paid the tax and your check has cleared.

Send a copy of your bank statement with the bill and IRS will attempt to track down the money.
