Getting married later this year. Can I put married as of now ?

I have one job right now. I have a two week old baby. I changed my dependents from 1 to 2 claiming myself and my baby. The mother is a stay at home mom she doesn't work. I want to even out get a good amount of money throughout the year and also get a good tax return. I'm guessing by the end of the year I will make 24k. What should I do? Can I put married now ahead of time and 2 Dependants. And when tax seasons comes claim myself my baby and my future wife? How should i arrange my w-4??

You can safely claim "married" status and 6 allowances on your W4 as long as you are certain that you'll be married by 12/31/16.

your allowances per the worksheet are:

1 for yourself since you are not dependent on anyone

1 extra for yourself since you have only one job

1 for your (soon to be) spouse because they do not work

    1 for your dependent child

2 for the child tax credit

The end result is that very little will be withheld from your paycheck toward federal taxes. It might even work out to $0 withholding. But that's okay. When you do your tax return you'll get a standard deduction for married couples plus 3 exemptions which will bring your taxable income down to a few thousand bucks. That means ta tax liability of only a few hundred dollars before credits. The child tax credit and Earned Income Credit will easily wipe out your tax liability and still leave you with a few thousand dollars refund.

You could claim fewer allowances, but you'd just be loaning your money to the IRS every payday so that you can get it back next year at 0% interest.

You can. It's wiser to wait until you're actually married though. You'll get less taken out when you do, but any extra in your paycheck lowers your refund by that same amount - the total money you get is the same. You'll get EIC for the baby though, so you'll get big refund. And you can add another two allowances for the child tax credit on your W-4. If you're married by he end of the year, you can file a joint return - that will get you the most..

You can change now, as your tax status for the entire year will be married. You can change it to 3 if you like, mom counts since she has no income.
