iPod USB plays double speed in both of our cars?

Update:

We have an older iPod (10 years old) and two newer cars (2015 Focus, 2016 Cruze).

When we plug in the iPod it plays the music or audio-book double speed. High pitch, babbling voices, all the usual details of audio played at double speed.

Have others seen this problem? Since it happens in both cars it seems to be an issue on the iPod.

Both cars really want to sync up over the air not on USB. Getting audio on USB is deep down in their audio menus.

No disk on the new car so device only.

Update 2:

Thanks spacemissing! The older iPod was already formatted once and reloaded. No go.

Have other folks been able to play music out of the USB port on their iPod into the USB port on their car stereo?

If it works for most people I can conclude it's how old this one is and try a newer one. Then the question becomes how new. We've got an iPod micron or nano in a drawer. It would hold an entire novel on audio book.

Update 3:

Moving to car audio section.

Update 4:

Answer long after the fact -

The older iPod is "iPod Classic" and is now too old for software updates. It is not compatible with newer devices.

Too use as a USB sound source like in a car the iPod has to be "generation 3" or newer. We have an iPod Nano only a few years old. We updated it, loaded a music library to it. It works great.

There is something wrong with the files on the drive.

    Format it and try again.
