Changing my dependents on w-4?

I recently changed my W-4 from single to married with 3 dependents. But now I want a larger tax return can I change 3 dependents to 2? I recently just changed it, it only took affect for one paycheck. I got fired so I will no longer be receiving any paychecks. On my next job can I put married with 2 dependents? Or you can only add dependets not reduce ?

You can add or reduce. It should stay in effect until it's changed again

You seem to be very confused.

W-4 only goes to your employer. No one sees both the W4 from your old job and the one from your new job.

You can change the number of deductions as often as you want in either direction, as long as the result is enough taxes withheld from your paycheck.

If lie on your W4 in order to deliberately underpay your taxes, you will be charged a fine and possibly arrested. If you lie in order to deliberately overpay now and get a large refund, the IRS will happily take your money.

The W-4 form is "allowances" not dependents. It's simply a formula (see the worksheet on the form!) to adjust your withholding per pay period.

On the form you can put 0 allowances (the most withheld); married, but use single rate (higher withholding) and even add additional money per pay period.

That said, you should aim to not owe. Large refunds can be delayed by months.

Why would you want to take that money away from your spouse and kids all year to give the government an interest free loan???
