Website says "your phone may be infected by virus!"?

On my Motorola Droid Turbo 2 that I just got on Wednesday, I was surfing the web on Chrome when I clicked on a website that triggered a popup.

"Your phone may be infected by virus caused by visits to recent adult sites!" I have not looked up any pornography on this phone or any phone, so that wasn't right. I've seen this type of thing before, so I swiped up and clicked out of the browser.

I was sure it was malware or an ad for an antivirus app containing malware, but does anyone else know?

P.S. It had a picture of the android droid holding a wrench, if that helps.

Definitely virus. I had one once and it locked my phone, pretended to be the police and asked for £200 because I apparently looked at beastiality, child porn etc. I know for sure I did nothing of the sort and just rebooted my phone. No problems after that. The ransomware was downloaded as an 'update for android browser'.

I can assure you that there is no virus in your phone if you have stayed away from the sites it is telling you that you have visited.

Of course it was a scam. But why do you not have an anti-virus to prevent these attacks?

There is a lot of malware and scams. Try a security scan program like Norton to check for bugs!
