CLARIFIED: Can't a hair dryer be used as a heat gun?
Seems like they're the same things - or is a hair dryer too hot? Or some other reason it'd be unsuitable?
My intended use is to shrink wrap books & such. As for temperature, I don't know temps for hair dryers, but the wattage on hair dryers is comparable to heat guns and even on the higher side.
Sorry to re-up, but y'all answered so fast and likely wouldn't have looked again otherwise.
Apologies.

No. You want a craft heat gun. Which is NOT the same as a heat gun use for taking off paint. John and roger are not talking about a craft heat gun.
A craft heat gun doesn't not blow air as strongly as your hair dyer. The air from your hair dryer would be too forceful for your projects,
You can find them in the scrapbooking aisle at any craft store. Hobby lobby, Michaels, JoAnn fabrics. The cost under $30 and you can always find a coupon for these stores.
When searching on line also use "embossing heat tool"
We use a craft heat gun at my store to shrink wrap gifts all the time. Works fine

They are not the same. Heat guns come in versions up to really hot (or may have various heat-level settings, some of which are "really hot"), where hair dryers don't get as hot especially given the same distance from the item (and if too close, hair dryers could short out). Heat guns also don't "blow" like hair dryers; they just project heat so are much better for preventing dust or powders from moving and/or settling on the item being heated/melted.
"Embossing heat guns" (from craft stores) don't get as hot as heat guns purchased in hardware stores for stripping paint, shrink wrapping, and other uses, though they're like heat guns in the other ways.

All types will create higher heat on an item the closer they are to it, and that's one way of controlling regular heat guns and embossing heat guns.

no. heat guns get a lot hotter. My heat gun blows 800 F air. Imagine what that will do to your head as a hair dryer

Heat guns get hotter, are more controllable, and don't blow air (which, depending on what you're doing could blow away your project). You can get one pretty cheap at Harbor Freight--about $20, I think? Maybe $30.

Maybe. it might have enough heat for that.
A heat gun has much higher level of heat -- enough to remove paint. That much heat would burn your scalp if you tried it on hair.
