SKS or "self-loading carbine Simonov," named for its Russian inventor, Sergei Simonov. It fires the 7.62x39 cartridge the same as the AK47 but has a fixed magazine, unless modified.

He was using an SKS semi-automatic rifle. I used to own one, and there's really nothing special about it.
Anyone going on about how it's an "assault rifle" is just adding to the background noise. Those listening for more than a nanosecond to that background noise either have something wrong with them or they're preparing to add to the problem.

Does it matter? Others have given you the information. Upset it wasn't an AR-15?
