Literally, Jesus birth mother, Mary, and his beloved disciple, unnamed but thought to be, John

Figuratively, Mary and the Church that would be established in his name by the time the gospel was written.

Less popularly and figuratively, the old, worn out and useless to the strong, powerful, and young.

    Many more meanings.

The woman was his mother. The son was John, his favorite disciple. Apparently, his father was dead and his brothers had not yet accepted God's forward movement from Judaism.
