What animals on the planet have been seen but never been photographed or filmed that we know they exist or existed?

Your answer belongs on the biology forum. Nothing to do with astronomy. If you move your question there, you will be told of the many species of life that biologists have discovered and documented, but have yet to publish acceptable photographs of them.

Not an easy question to answer. I do not think there are any photos of a live specimen of Raphus cucullatus (Dodo) although we know humans saw it. There are animals we know were seen by humans whilst extant and are now extinct. I do not know of any for which there are no photos of live specimens whilst the species was extant.

There are species we know that existed but are extinct. Either they were seen by humans prior to the development of photography or even existed prior to the evolution of humans.

There will be species that existed until quite recently but have gone extinct and we know of no human who has seen them.

There are many as yet undiscovered species that have not been photographed.

Seen by Man...? Mammoths, certain species of Frogs, the Dodo...

There's plenty of evidence for earlier creatures - dinosaurs of all kinds, fish, large insects, etc., that existed before Man showed up...

the dodo, no live photos or videos were ever taken of a dodo yet we know it existed (all photos are of stuffed dead ones)... if you're talking about animals that aren't extinct then we can't answer that, because its impossible to prove something exists nowadays if there aren't any photos, videos or carcasses to prove it
