I need some good ideas for chew toys for a teething 4 month old puppy. What toys have worked for you?

We normally get toys from thrift stores because they are smellier, but get ripped easily. New ones from PETCO or PETSMART are expensive and still not really made to not be chewed up

I am looking for:

A.) Stuffed Animals

B.) Soothing teething ideas

C.) Well made toys

Its either JoJo or Dorothy (other forum members) who has a good idea for soothing teething chews. She suggests you get some socks, tie knots in them, soak them in water and freeze them.

As for stuffed animals, your dog doesnt care if it actually has a face. I buy cheap fabric from the market for around £2 a metre. You can just make tubes and knotted ropes for them to tear up.

I also get brown paper bags, put a piece of kibble in and screw it up. They can tear it up looking for the biscuit. And that also works with the roll from inside carpets. If you can find a carpet shop they'll probably be glad to give you some, out a dab of fish oil or something inside.

As for well made toys I rate the Barnacle chew toy, its like a Kong. You can get them from Amazon. There are also biscuit dispensing balls with knobbles on the outside which are good for teeth and gums, and they start at around £3.

For a teething puppy, I love what "nooby" suggested on the homemade toys, I also use bully sticks quite a bit and a new favorite of mine is goDog FurBallz, it has a chew guard so it holds up really well to my puppy playing, but watch soft toys if your dog tears them apart, I give my terrier puppy a kong toy with peanut butter frozen in it, she likes the plastic bones, ropes, and bully sticks because she will destroy a soft toy but my keeshond puppy isn't as chew aggressive, mostly likes to toss them around and squeaky toys, loves the FurBallz. Watch how your puppy plays with any toys he gets will tell you alot of what to look for, and look.

    Hope this helps

be very careful with what you give you puppy or dog to chew. My vet told me over the holidays he has 6 emergencies all from dogs swallowing holiday dog gifts, 4 needed emergency surgery and 2 died, the 2 that died had eaten rawhide toys that plugged up their stomachs and intestines. Other blockage from cheap plastic toys, and one from a beef joint bone, my vet recommends nothing but Nylabones for dog chews.

You need to be CAREFUL where you buy products for a puppy. Some things made in China or toys never MADE for dogs, are not appropriate (IMO). Saving a buck (by using thrift items) but ending up with a thousand dollars in vet bills, is NOT a good idea.

A frozen washcloth can be very soothing to a teething 4 months old to chew or mouth on. It would depend on the breed or mix you have. Very FEW stuffed toys, can survive a chewer.

I like the older Dr. Noys (made by Kong). In later editions (of this type) the Kong "cross-knot" toys worked pretty well for my Weimaraner puppy,... as long as there was strict supervision. They contain a squeaky. The Zanies stuffed toys have survived better at my house, than non-name brand. They can be found at Sam's club, on amazon.com or many places online like this one:

I personally HIGHLY recommend either periodic raw soup bones (found in your grocery store in either the freezer section or thru your butcher) or deer/elk antlers for the puppy often sold under the Antlerz brand.

The beehive shaped Kong (lots of sizes & can be stuffed with food) & Orbee can be good for tougher chewers The black Kong is for the very toughest chewers.

Jeffers dog catalog has a TON of good toys and chewy items, bones, antlers & treats.

I've found Nylabone tends to last as much as any other toys, plus the freezing a rag/washcloth idea. I also have a Whippet who is unbelieveable rough with her Kong Wubba which survives her ragging more than most.

If teething is upsetting your puppy a lot, see your vet who can offer relief.
