Fire Extinguisher verses Tear Gas?
I am doing research for a book and my characters are going to be using tear gas. The use of Tear gas is apparently banned in war yet we are ok with using it on civilians.
Also tear gas is very hard to get out of a building or house - you may as well abandon it and never use it again. The cost would be extreme. It turns into a powder that can be re-activated by heat etc.
Anyway - I was wondering what would happen if a canister of tear gas was going off and someone used a fire extinguisher at it - what would happen?

Most fire extinguishers are filled with pressurized CO2. So you end up smothering the fire. The CO2 comes out of the extinguisher cold because of the change in pressure.
Spraying a fire extinguisher on tear gas would result in slightly colder tear gas. It wouldn't neutralize the tear gas in the least.

I believe that the effects of the tear gas would not be minimised by much. The fire extinguisher (there are many types depending on the fuel source) would probably most likely smother the canister and the gases being expelled, but unlikely to prevent the gases from rising. The fire extinguisher is usually used to smother, prevent a fire from continuing to burn by removing oxygen which it needs to exist. Gas on the other hand is not stopped by the removal of oxygen. It may be slowed by the smothering effect but the extinguisher material is not strong enough to contain the gas. It would simply continue to seep out at the point of least resistance.
