Popular science has a bit of an adversarial relationship with mainstream religion, due to the outrageous (but loud) creationists who believe their system conflicts with science. Of course, this is ridiculous - many amazing scientists believe in a higher power, and most creationists believe in evolution, even if they do assume God influenced it. Even the catholic church accepts that god creating the world in six days must have been a metaphor, judging by current science.
So, basically, I think there's a strong core of pop science enthusiasts who believe that science and religion conflict (I suppose you can just look at the answers here to see that!). Therefore, it would be unwise for a show in popular culture, inspired by science, to prominently feature religion.
