One of my hen's is starting to lay soft eggs.?

She's a 3 year old Rhode Island Red and lately her eggs are soft. I mix oyster shells in with the food and my birds free range in the backyard almost everyday. Any idea why?

She's not a good layer??? Layer pellets, 14-16 hours of light to simulate long summer days, oyster shells for calcium n still has problems?? Maybe feed the oyster shells seperately from the grain??

She needs more calcium in her diet, so give her lay mash plus crushed up eggshell in addition to being free-range. 3 is getting old for a hen, so her egg-laying days are numbered, anyway.

You need to put more calcium in her food. putting ground up egg shells and other foods with calcium in her diet will solve the problem (You could even get some cuttle bone from a pet store and crush it up really fine and sprinkle it in her food)! Good luck!

So the oyster shells I put in with the layer feed isn t enough calcium?

My guess (and that is all it is) would be that the eggs are moving through the oviduct too quickly.
