Why is Neil Degrasse Tyson advocating for science literacy?

Because it is useful. But before anyone starts slamming all religions, does Christianity oppose science literacy? No. Jesus told a story of a Good Samaritan who provided medical care to an injured stranger. Jesus said "do likewise". It is clear what Jesus is advocating. But there are religious people in history who are murderous fools. They are bold misrepresentation of Christianity. They are blind and narrow-minded. On the opposite side, there are many modern Christian based hospitals and universities that include science and technology in their courses.

Because he wants people to stop being so superstitious and/or ignorant about reality.
