I'm watching the Olympics. Rugby-Kenya vs Japan. The Kenyans are quite a bit bigger. Is that an advantage?

It depends. Smaller teams are faster and can cover more ground in less time but bigger teams have the brute force to just stop their opposition moving forwards at all & the strength to turnover at the breakdown.

In sevens, it's less of an advantage to be big. It's much more important to have damn good handling and be fast.

However, in league (13s) and union (15s) it can be a disadvantage to be a smaller team, more so in men's games than women's.

The best teams have a good mix of both. If two opposing teams are hugely different sizes, like Kenya v Japan, both will have advantages and disadvantages, and it comes down to player conditioning and technical ability.

In the Olympics they play 7's. Size doesn't count for as much in the 15 a side game. The Japanese are fast and clever.

New Zealand was quite a bit bigger too and Japan still won.

Not really, you don't have to be big to play

  • In sevens...not so much. More about pace, passing, possession.

It CAN be. It can be a disadvantage.
