Can you develop bipolar disorder?

For example, you were tested for bipolar disorder at 16 years old, and diagnosed with depression (not bipolar). Can it turn into bipolar disorder/ can you develop it as well later in life (19 years old)?

Bipolar disorder can show up later or, as in my case, I was diagnosed with depression and treated for 20 years before my new psychiatrist discovered I'd had bipolar disorder the whole time.

Yes. In fact it's fairly typical to be diagnosed with depression first because often (not always) depression is the first episode of Bipolar. Once a manic episode happens the diagnosis can be changed to Bipolar. Bipolar is diagnosed because of mania.... If you are having symptoms of mania, you should go back to your doctor.
