Non-english speaker in school?

My sisters step-daughter just moved to California from Mexico. She doesn't know any english and she is about 11. Is there a program out there where we can hire someone that can go with her to school and translate someone? Maybe even teach her some english.

Frequently teachers' assistants are bilingual in Spanish, and many teachers assign bilingual buddies for new students to help them fit in. Schools provide ESL instruction directly in English. No need to hire anyone, unless possibly a tutor to work with her at home. Most children adapt readily to the new situation.

The school should be able to provide that as so many students are Hispanic. As far as her learning English, I know of someone who told me they learned English when they first came to America by watching children's programming on PBS. Makes sense to me.

Public schools are required to meet her needs if she is a permanent resident. I suggest you talk to them and see how they plan to address the issue.
