I want to keep my hair long because women tend to prefer it.. but.. I like my short hair because someone I idolize is a marine, he's my hero.
Then when I sort of think deeply about it and the people I see talking about what hair they prefer, they seem to very shallow. I don't want to be friends with someone who judges me because I chose not to grow out my hair?

Your head, your choice as to what you do or don't do with your hair. Does not matter what others think of it, because once it's done, there would be nothing that could be done about it anyway, other than some sort of hair pieces or wig(s).

If you want to cut it, then go ahead and do it. Some girls might like the short hair better anyway
Don't let other people's opinions deter you from doing what you want to do. (:
