is it possible to convert a CDMA phone to a different account?

I have an old phone that claims to have a different number, though the service is shut off. if I make an account with the company, can I re-use the handset or do I have to discard it and get a new one? I read somewhere that kind of phone doesn't have a SIM card

You take the phone in question, to the CDMA carrier in question or choice and ask them if that particular phone can be activated on that carrier's network.

If this is a current phone, rather than a MUCH older analog older phone, there shouldn't be any problem, as the phone number is connected to the account, not the device.

If the old and new carriers allow it, you can move it, otherwise you can't.
