The starts and stripes represented the 13 colonies. They originally added a stripe for each new state but realized that would become awkward so they changed to 13 stripes for the original states and one star for each current state.

The five-point star was much easier to cut than a six-point, which is why Betsy Ross suggested it to George Washington.

Betsy Ross was a seamstress whose grandson made up a cock-and-bull story about her sewing the first American flag.

We have no proof she actually designed the flag. The myth was started BY HER FAMILY long after her death and has stuck.
