Why is carrying a purse considered a feminine thing?

Obviously if it's pink and has flowers or lace or whatever on it it's obviously for a girl, but simply having a handbag to carry your stuff around instead of filling your pockets sounds like a really good idea. Why don't men use them too?

    men's pants pockets are double the size of the pockets in women's clothing
