Scheduling issues at work?

Our staffing director left for vacation on 8-22-16 and did not give my coworkers and I our September schedule. Normally, we get our schedules on the 25th of month. When the staffing director returned from vacation on 8-29, they did not have an "official" schedule to give us, so they gave us a schedule that we all new was subject to change. My day off was 8-31, and according to my regular work rotation, I would have had 9-1 off as well. The "unofficial" schedule that I was given, had listed me as off for 9-1.

On 8-31, the staffing director released the "official" September schedule. The staffing director did not call me to notify me that my schedule had changed, and did not notify me that the real schedule was out.

On 9-1, I received a VERY angry phone call from my staffing director, telling me that I was an hour late for work and asking where I was. I had made plans to go to my friend's birthday party, and was getting things ready for the party. I went to work, anyway.

Can my staffing director change my schedule without telling me, and still fully expect me to show up?

When do you think the September schedule is going to be finalized - in October? You should have had the good sense to check on Aug. 31.
