What do you call it when someone goes through an extremely traumatic experience?
Let's say someone goes through a severe traumatic experience and instead of remembering it, their brain creates false memories about it that are bad but aren't as severe in order to cope with what happened. Is there a word for that condition?

It's called "blocking." You "block" or "block out" the memory by either forgetting or by superimposing a different memory, one that alters the situation enough so that you can better psychologically cope with it. It's done subconsciously, so unless others remember what happened and can verify that your memory isn't accurate, or unless there is some physical record, such as video, then there is no way to really know you've done it.
