Cutting my dogs nails?

I have a dachshund/chihuahua mix. She is almost eight. She has always hated getting her nails clipped. Usually it takes two of us to hold her. She shakes the whole time. I feel so bad putting her through that but she has to have her nails clipped. I have thought about getting pedi paws but she hates buzzing noises and I think she would hate that just as much. I would like to avoid taking her to the vet to have them do it. Any suggestions? Anyone been through this? Thanks!

You can buy a Quickfinder nail clipper, that tells you when it is safe to trim the nails. These are costly but may be worth it for you. You can get a mild tranquilizer (usually a tablet) for your dog from your vet (say it is for grooming and the vet will know what you need) to calm the dog down before you begin.

You can trim trim off a small amount once a week until the dog gets used to it or just trim once a month if that suits you better. Have some Kwik Stop (the best pet styptic) handy in case you cut a little too far. You can find Kwik Stop and the fancy nail trimmers at places like Ryan'sPet Supply, www.ryanspet.com, or Pet Edge, www.petedge.com.

Holding her down only makes it worse. Lay her in your lap on her back. If she get figity, then rub her tummy and sing to her. Only do a few nails at a time. Eventually she will learn to accept it.

Use a file to scrape the nail off instead. Clipping nails could hurt her. That's what I did to my German Shepard, after he runs away when I get the clippers.

    My dog bites.

One person clips his nails, the other person continuously feeds him liver treats. Try treats.

Either you do it or the vet office does.
