What kind of rock is this?

I received it as a gift so I don't have any background information on it (where it was bought, originated from, etc). All I can tell based on what it looks like which is a white outer rock and the inside has a silky luster similar to selenite. One small half of the "selenite" inside is bit darker, a grayer tone. If someone could help me identify it I would appreciate it.

I presume it is soft like talc. could be a carbonate (perhaps some sort of chalk). time to start scratching. conceivably it could even be quartz but I seriously doubt it.
