How Would You Have Tip In This Situation?

1. You go to a restaurant you have dined at over a dozen times before.

2. You are not aware 2 line cooks are out sick and the orders are backing up.

3. Your order was taken no quicker or slower than any other time.

4. You realize things are out of sorts when 15 minutes passes and you have been served your entrees.

5. You ask what is taking so long and the food server tells you 2 cooks are out sick and the kitchen is understaffed.

Had you known the place was having a bad night, you would have gone somewhere else this one time only.

Do you tip like you normally tip (generous yet not over the top) or do you lower it for being "deceived"?

    You weren't deceived. Caveat emptor~ buyer beware. The restaurant is under no obligation to tell all the people who come through the door that they are having an off night. They did not ask you to come there, so they don't need to volunteer any adverse information. You came in of your own free will. You should be the one to ask if everything is ok so you can make a judgement call as to whether you want to eat there. As for tipping, if the wait staff treated you the way they always do, then you should not lower the amount you tip as they did nothing wrong. If their service was distasteful, then yeah, lower the amount you give.

    I would tip like I usually do. It isn't the server's fault 2 cooks are out sick.

    I ran into this situation just last night.,, but when I saw the owner sitting there reading a newspaper and not helping out, the next time we go out to dinner, we will have second thoughts about where we go

    I would tip like I normally do. I wouldn't blame my server for two of the line cooks being out sick. I've worked as a waitress before, I know how hard it is to manage and serve people when understaffed.

    I would tip less than usual but still leave a tip because they did put effort in trying.

    Let it go. I would tip normally. It was an off day for the restaurant. It happens.

    Like I always do, I am tipping my server for doing best as he/she can, not the cooks

    PS you weren't deceived in anyway, you were told about the cooks being sick..

    Normally tip 15 percent of the bill.

    Tips are based on the servers performance, not the efficiency of the kitchen staff.
