Why can one remember some things crystal clear and others not?

I can remember certain people, items, numbers and events many years back. Some things that happened recently too. But others I totally forget or cannot recall. Even from a few days back. How does that work?

Selective priorities. IF you are MOTIVATED by something and properly stimulated...you will remember it. If it was not important and you did not associate a common idea to it at the time you won't remember it.

For instance...I could never remember the name of a friends dog (she kept getting the SAME BREED OVER and OVER so the NEW one got a NEW name). This time I associated the dog with a set of MOOSE HORNS...like those on BULLWINKLE. I think HORNS....BULLWINKLE and then the DOG'S name which is ROCKY! Bullwinkle and ROCKY was a cartoon decades ago...but I remember it.

Yes I know, if it's important to you you will remember it. That's how i used to remember things very well as a kid.
