What is the problem with tipping?

I don't get why people are getting upset or "taking a stand" against tipping. What is the difference in tipping the wait staff and paying for labor at a mechanic? Yeah, they are doing less work, but it's also a significantly lower amount of money. Even as a percentage of your total money spent, the amount you would tip your waiter/waitress is significantly less. The only exception to this is when you go to a mechanic and have to buy a really expensive part that doesn't take much time and energy to install, and sometimes, the percentage for labor is still higher.

The only difference anyone has been able to show is that labor is automatically added to your bill. That's actually worse, because, even people who generally do tip at restaurants have control over the amount they tip. They can make a decision on what to pay based on how well they have been treated. Why is having this ability taken from you better?

Its funny, because a few years back a resturant in Canada (BC) had a no tipping policy. Guests were estatic at first as they just paid more money for their food so staff was paid a decent living wage. After a few months, the local community basically begged to have it changed by to the normal tipping style resturant. What people don't realize is that either way, you pay the money that you would have tipped in the food cost at a no tipping restaurant. The only difference is that YOU have control when you tip. Waitress was horrible? Leave little to no tip. That doesn't happen if you have to pay higher food prices at a no tipping establishment. People hate not having that control once it is taken away from them. People who complain about tipping are usually just cheap and don't realize that they STILL pay the tip money by buying the food with increased costs at restaurants with no tipping policies.

Your comparison with billing by a mechanic is misplaced. You are told what the service rate is (e.g., dollars per hour with some minimum charge). You either agree to pay it, or you take your business elsewhere. In a restaurant, they don't tell you ANYTHING about what the service is going to cost you. It is included in the menu price. That's all you need to know. Tips are extra.

If someone at the restaurant said, "we're going to have Sally serve you at $15 an hour more, or you could request James at $30 an hour more", how would you select?

So if you win this "taking a stand" they will just add 20% waitress labor to your next check when you eat out. Why don't you go to drive throughs and eat at at home if you don't want to tip. There's no law that says you have to tip but I wouldn't eat at the same restaurant twice if you don't.Thats my tip for you.

I don't receive tips for my job and think the whole concept is demeaning. I would prefer that people are paid properly for the work they do and the whole business of gratuities was scrapped.
