So with all the threats of boycotting the NFL due to the national anthem stuff, did league viewership take a hit? Or did it set records?

TV ratings for the week one NFL games were down pretty much across the board, when compared to last season. Ratings for the Thursday night game were down. Sunday night game, down. Both Monday night games were down.
If you want specific numbers, last years early Monday night game (Eagles-Falcons) drew a 9.8. This years Steelers-Redskins drew a 9.1. The late Monday night game last year (Vikings-49'ers) drew a 9.5. This years Rams-49'ers game drew a 7.1. If you want raw numbers, about 4 million fewer people were tuned into the late Monday night game in 2016 as compared to 2015.
You can decide for yourself how much of that viewer dropoff was due to fans boycotting the NFL because of the Kaepernick protest, and how much was due to viewers just having too much football dumped on them for opening week.

People can talk about boycotting all they want but the NFL knows that's all it is: Talk. If league owners thought that the Monkey See Monkey Do protest might actually cost them money, they'd stop it. But it won't so they don't.
When it comes to the NFL, money is the only thing that matters.

The threats are just that.Nothing will be done. The tickets in most cases were paid for long ago.To pretend people won't go to these games is silly.I haven't heard of people turning off the free games on TV

I only glanced at the scores. Not because of any boycott but because the NFL has gotten boring.
