How do I tax and MOT in the UK a car that is registered in Ireland (that's the ROI)?
I saw a great car on an auction site today, but it is registered in the Republic of Ireland and I'm in the UK. The car is in the UK but has no tax or an MOT, which I need before I can insure it or drive it on UK roads. I've checked and the Government site is unhelpful as to how to register it, tax or MOT it here. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to get it a UK registration and number plate, so I can then MOT it here?

Edward is nearly right.
If it it over 3 years old it needs an MOT to register it.
This requires you either to get it transported to the MOT station or to insure it to the VIN number.
It can then be driven with no plates to the closest MOT station with a pre booked test.
Once registered yiu can tax it. Get the platrs made and fit them.

The basic procedure for importing a car into the UK is:
1) Buy the vehicle and have it transported to the UK.
2) Inform HMRC within two weeks of it arriving, pay VAT (you don't need to pay duty for an import from the EU, unless you're a car dealer).
3) Have the vehicle approved for UK use - from within the EU you don't need a VOSA inspection, a European Certificate of Conformity from the manufacturer will be enough.
4) Register and tax the vehicle with DVLA - if you can't prove the age of the vehicle, you'll need to get Q plates.
5) Once you receive your V5C you can have number plates made and get it insured.
