Why do some people just hate video games?

I've always liked gaming, and my parents are fine with it, yet the news seems to be saying "video games make kids shoot people in the face!" which is not true. Dick Cheney shot a guy in the face. You really think he's a gamer? No. My theory is that gaming is something new that most people do not understand.

"Oh, but video games are really violent!" Yeah, so is TV, movies, books, and everything else, including FOX news.

Gamers have always been looked down on by religious groups and people too old to know what the internet is. I've never seen violent video games as anything more than a harmless stress relief. I believe that if you're impressionable enough to hurt or even kill someone because of a game, you probably would have done so even without gaming. Violence in video games isn't going to make people with good morals go on a killing spree, and it's not as if gaming is the only source of violence in today's media. Violence is and always will be appealing to people. Most of us live quite mundane, boring lives, so why shouldn't we be able to take a few hours to pretend to break things and shoot at bad guys. It's nice to be able to go to a world where you're the hero. People who don't understand that will never learn what gaming really is, they'll always just see it as training to murder people in real life.

Part of it definitely is as you said- a lot of people don't really understand video games, and have no experience with them outside of television ads for CoD and the word "game." With only that information, it's very easy to assume that they pitch violence as something fun and playful, getting kids interested in it and thinking it's okay irl. Obviously this isn't the case, but that's their perception.

There have also been studies that suggest it- even though they've been largely discredited, it can be validating to see a study that supports something you believed and suspected in the first place.

There's also something of a perception of "gamers" being callous and cruel to people wrt violence. There's an incredibly vocal minority of gamers who insults and harasses people they deem as "sensitive," including over things like violence- this reflects poorly on the entire medium.

Yeah but in video games you're actually committing the act. It may not make you violent but it can to others. It's also unhealthy and antisocial. It's fine to play video games it's just when you're playing them regularly that it's bad. Video games are also derivative towards women like in gta with strip clubs and women only wearing tiny tops and shorts. Some video games are okay but gta and call of duty can induce violence, obnoxiousness and give you the wrong idea about women and how they want to be treated.

It's really one of those reasons people try to blame something instead of blaming themselves but video games

OK. So those who like to blame video games are simply foolish. Cause before video games, it was easy to blame movies. Before movies, it was t.v. Before T.V is was etc etc etc. Its so easy to blame something when people never stop to think about if it was the individual itself who was wrong to begin with. Take for instance, Grand theft auto is widely known for its violence, theft, prostitutes and such but rarely no one goes out and does the things they do in the videogame . A study showed that people actually feel guilty when they go around killing innocent people in the game. Now for those who have done such things(rarely mind you), people are going to blame the game really fast without asking some serious questions. A boy named cody who was obsessively playing GTA vice city killed his Father, stepmother and stepsister. Now of course people are quick to blame Vice city but did anyone stop to ask

If he was obsessed with the game, why did no one stop him from playing?

It was also found out that he had took drugs while killing his family but of course the video game is to blame. Lets not wonder what the drugs did or again, why did no one stop him FROM PLAYING THE GAME?! Cody also claimed he was getting abused by his father but of course..lets blame the video game

When people blame games, they never ask questions that really matter but are quick to judge
