How do you make the jump from working in sales to working in marketing?

I'm currently working in sales and have been working in inside sales for the past several years. My real passion is in marketing, advertising and communications and my degree was in English and Journalism.

Up until now I thought I could get better at sales and then transfer that to marketing since the two are symbiotic. But I'm starting to doubt that and wonder if I should just jump into marketing. What is the best way of doing that? Is there a way to make that transition? What positions should I be looking for?

Marketing is a bit of a niche. You'd be competing with people with actual marketing degrees and maybe intern experience. Start by seeing if you can get any job at all in a marketing firm.

Once you're working at one, be the best employee and volunteer for everything. You want to cultivate a reputation for being positive and dependable. Then when a marketing coordinator job opens, they'll know you're a great employee and be more likely to show you preference over someone with a degree and experience.

"Just to be in sales?" I know, people love to run down the sales profession because they just don't understand.

Look around. Most people with ultra-high incomes are in sales of some form.

If you didn't have salespeople, you wouldn't have cars, computers, underwear, food, shelter, beer, you name it, and you wouldn't have it without salespeople.

Sorry, but wow. Typical intellectual phrasing used by someone who thinks they're superior to salespeople.

You basically have two main avenues if you want to get into marketing. Either take marketing classes, or work in a customer service environment where you'll learn about marketing programs. Unless you're under someone really good at it who's willing to teach you, just "jumping in" would probably be a disaster, especially since you're been successful in sales (I know you're successful because you've stayed with it for several years. You wouldn't have survived if you weren't any good at it).

I'm astonished that you went to college and got a degree just to be in sales?!

    Sorry but wow.
