How come many Americans mispronounce "Gangnam" in Gangnam Style?

Even though it is said correctly many times in the song, and the correct sounds are already in English, typically they say “gAEng-nAEm” as opposed to “gAHng-nAHm” (or “Gongnom”).

Because gangnam is not an English word. The same reason the people who can pronounce gangnam correctly, can't say "fried rice."

If what you say is true, it is likely because of the English word "gang," which is pronounced "gaeng." If it were spelled "gongnom," English speakers would probably pronounce it more accurately.
