Should I let my manager know I am getting treated for depression?

I had some issues since childhood due to my dad's alcohol problems and their extreme parenting and finally saw a therapist today. Since I am crying on a regular basis he suggested I see a psychiatrist for antidepressants.

A lot of these visits will be during work hours so I will have to let my manager know I am going out for "errands" but if I go on too many errands it may look like I dont care about my job and am just going to job interviews andd stuff. Should I let my manager know I am getting treatment for depression?

That's up to you..... Not everyone is accepting about it. I am Bipolar (my employer does NOT know) and I see a therapist once a week. I schedule them at lunch time.... add 10 minutes to drive each way and it's 70 minutes. Sometimes I tell my boss I'm taking a long lunch and other times I say nothing..... The other way is to make an evening appointment.... then leave work a few minutes early. When you see your psychiatrist just say you have a doctor's appointment. They have no right to ask what for.

Thats interesting. Depends a lot. If you work in Public Sector or Large Organisation you probably would have had to declare it at the start I would have though. If its a small business you might get away with just saying you have health issues that need addressing for a while. People can be very put off by depression unfortunately and it's a tall order to try and change all the stigma in the world on your own, Good Luck!!

It won't be that many visits, will it, I mean really you don't need to go every day. I would not say anything. Last time I did that I got fired because some stupid girl told everyone I was going to commit suicide. Just if you cry tell him your hormones are off, you guess. I went through that where if someone just looked at me sideways I cried. It was like a went into a valley of tears and surrounded by all the sorrow in the world. My boss one day told me I could not eat my potato chips at my desk. I broke out in tears and no one could stop my crying. Kinda funny now that I look back on it. After I went through that phase I have not been able to cry since.

If it was your manager who told you to go see a psychiatrist, go back and say thank you for the advice, and now you will need to schedule a bit around your sessions. Try to find time to go when you are NOT scheduled to work.

Just tell him that they are medical appointments. Anyone with half a brain should know that it is private information and that they shouldn't ask what for.
