Perhaps it was due to either job availability, prior work experience (or lackthereof), and/or where employees are needed the most. The job of dishwasher may be more physical than a server, but perhaps starting out as a dishwasher may show management that you're motivated and have a great work ethic. Then, if a position opens up for server (or perhaps bus person, for instance), maybe you may apply for the job and change positions to a server. Just an fyi that a server needs a great memory, excellent customer service skills, and physical stamina.
If you're planning on taking the job of dishwasher, please make sure to learn how to use proper body mechanics, which may help lessen the chance of back (and/or neck) injury, for instance. Proper body mechanics include lifting items or objects by NOT bending at the waist but rather slightly bending one's knees while keeping a *straight* back. One is supposed to hold the object as closely as possible to oneself as to help distribute the weight of the item. Also, one is supposed to pivot (turn) the feet as a whole unit to hopefully keep the spine aligned. Please ask management for more specific tips on ways to lift objects more safely.

happens all the time ; if the restaurant has more of a need for a dishwasher than a server, then that's where you will start.........the good thing is that if you are a good employee, you can move up to a server, then maybe a cook, etc etc
