Is paying off student loans actually that hard to do?

I m a first year college student commuting at a public university and I m missing out a lot. I really really want to live at school and I m not happy at home but my mom won t stop putting it in my head that I d be stupid to spend all that money. If I have a job won t it be okay to pay it over time? So many people go to college and they pay their debt, so I don t know why she s making it such a big deal.

"College experience" is a broad and general term and in reality, it comes in all shapes and sizes. When you started going to school and interacting with that environment, I think that is part of the college experience too, because you are experiencing college life.

But to answer your question, paying off student loans doesn't have to be hard, however its a life lesson in personal finance, budgeting and living within your means and it takes time. Of course you need a job to have income, but the paychecks go towards a variety of costs, not just student loans. Yes, you can pay it over time and there are several payment plan options (for the federal student loans at least) but you have to stay on top of those payments, just like other bills. If you get better jobs in the future, you may potentially earn more money, which can help you have more money to better pay the bills.

If you really want to live on campus, apply for housing for the next term if you can and if you have financial aid, see if some of it can go towards paying for it. Good luck!

The so-called "college experience" is really a marketing scheme to get your money and it's even sold by hollywierd to the gullible. There is no "college experience." We all have our own experiences dependent on our taste and preferences as well as our pocket books. That's the real world. If you can go to school without incurring any debt; that is your best option. You'll never regret. If you ASSume you have to live-out some kind of hollywierd fantasy, you (like Elliot Rodger) are in for a rude awakening. I'm a CPA with 20+ years exepreince. I've seen it up close and all played out.

Took me 14 years to pay off $80k, and that was eons ago. Cant imagine trying that now. I left $800 debt just to see what would happen. Nothing happens.
