Since about 1000AD when all Russia converted to Greek form Christianity and was united under Vladimir the Saint (so for 1016 years). Of course the culture matured over time and became fully mature and set (1470) under Ivan III (the Great). Prior to c.1000AD the pagan Slavic and Scandinavian people, their chiefs and princes weren't really 'Russian' but proto (or pre) Russian.

The first actual Russian identity emerged in late 1AD with Russian Vikings and influences from Finnish and Hungarian, as well as Middle Eastern and Asiatic/Mongolian sources, and Greco-Roman influences in the Greek Orthodox Church. The richness of this mix gave rise to a unique Russian culture expressed in dance, music, painting, sculpture, etc. So, with the birth of a Russian identity in the first century AD, came an incredibly rich cultural heritage.
