Cheapest way to get windows?
My current version of Windows is somewhat less than legit. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, and, even though it was apparently updateable, I never trust that claim about pirate copies, so it's never been updated.
Personally, I think Windows is bloatware at best, and I have a linux/windows dual-boot. But I haven't gotten around to learning Linux yet.
I would really have to kick my own backside if I forked over the price of Windows. I see even Windows 7 is still being sold for far, FAR more than it's worth.
Looking into it, I see I can just buy a product key. Is it possible to use a legit product key to activate a non-legit copy if I reinstall it?
In fact, I hear that, if you buy a product key, you can download the software for free. That makes no sense to me, since the key alone is so much cheaper than the software.
What about OEM copies?
EDIT: I found an OEM copy on EBAY for £15. Works great and is fully updated now

You heard correctly though. A key is essentially a license to use the software. You don't pay for the software, you pay for the license, and therefore the key.
That's why you can download Windows for free. You can even test it, but if you don't activate it, you can no longer use it after some time.
When you buy a legit Win7 key, all you do is press Win+Pause and click on "Change product key" at the bottom, then enter the key. Bam, legit Windows. Safe to update.

That is because it is likely to be a scam. You have no way of knowing if a key is legit until it is accepted or rejected by Microsoft by when the scammer will have you money and will have vanished.
If you want a legit copy of Windows you should buy a copy of Windows - if you do not think it is worth the money do not buy it and learn to use Linux.

You can buy a key off ebay for a reasonable amount

Dig up some sand and put it in the furnace. Use a crafting table and put glass blocks in a 3x2 shape to create glass panes
