Does a person have to adopt in order to be considered a step parent?

Like, say a father died when his kids were really young and the mother remarried before the kids turned 18. Does the new husband have to adopt the kids in order to be considered their stepfather? Or does the marriage give him that title? Also, is he now considered their legal guardian? Or just their mother? Thanks! 10 pts best answer

The marriage gives him the title of stepfather. Depending on the local laws, he may or may not be a legal guardian, but don't count on it. You may need paperwork to make the happen. If he adopts, then he's the father, not the stepfather.

Marriage gives him the title, some also extend that to a significant other of their parent who was there very long term.

A step-parent is not a legal parent to a child, he would only legally be their father if he adopted them.

Adoption = Father. Step father = stepfather. Two totally different things.

He has to adopt in order NOT to be the step dad. When he adopts, he's just Dad. Legally Dad.

The marriage makes him their stepfather, but no legal rights unless her adopts them.
