Microsoft word message: Illegal Qualified Name Character. now I can't open the file in anything but wordpad, and can't alter the content....?

Open the document in WordPad, then Copy and Paste the whole of the document into new Word document and save it.
Save it with a different filename to the original document, Close down Word, then try to Open it in Word again.
If it works, you can safely delete the original document and rename the new document as the original one.
