Can you identify this plant/tree/weed, for me?

I've got a few of these growing in a mulch pile behind my house. The started from nothing this spring and some grew as tall as 12' already with a 1.5-2" think stalk and a reasonably hearty root system.

It seems like some kind of weed.

The link is to a photo of some of the seed pods I cut off yesterday.

They are seeds from the Velvetleaf aka Buttonweed plant (Abutilon theophrasti) which is an invasive species originally from China.

It looks to me like some type of thistle relative, which is indeed a weed. It might help people who know way more about plants than I ever will if you say what part of the world you're in.

Also, I applaud the use of the banana for scale.
