Why do non-Americans refer o the country as America?

I noticed after I moved in to Canada and visited Europe, most people refer to the country as America, the States or US. In USA, I've noticed most people refer to it as the United States. Any reason for this?

North America is Canada, the U.S and Mexico. U.S can be referred as America because it was named after someone, I believe. I think it was a Spanish settler back when the U.S was founded.

Ask a Mexican ''was he white black or what'' you will hear ''he was an American'' meaning he was white just the way it is
