They happen to be one of the animals with strong maternal instincts, and there are many. Primates, rodents, fox, rabbits, even nursery web spiders. Elephants really are little different.
What they make for a nursery(and they do) is limited by their instinct and their lack of creative thought process.
Believe it or not, the crow comes the closest to building its own perfect nursery.
Humans and their creative thought, incorporate a nursery with medical facility to ensure survival.
