Help with electrons in chemistry?

In a chemical reaction, nonmetals gain electrons and become positively or negatively charged? Which one is it?

    they become negatively charged because they gain an electron which has a (-) charge. Before a chemical reaction, atoms have a neutral charge because there is an equal amount of protons (+ charge) to electrons (- charge) within the atom. So if an atom gains an electron it becomes negatively charged
