My dog growls constantly for no reason. It s like she s always edgy. It s not an aggressive or agitated growl.?

It s like if your dog were a yapper but instead of yapping constantly she walks around growling for no reason. It s super annoying and will eventual progress to barking and it s really hard to make her stop. Yelling at her and squirting her with a squirt gun don t work. Pinning her on her back for 30 seconds seems to but only for short periods. How can I break her of this super annoying habit! (P.s. When she starts the growling my other dog starts whining incessantly. They set each other off. Please help!)

You yell at your dog and pin it on its back and then wonder why it goes around growling and acting on edge all the time ....

Maybe you need to take some dog training classes, so you can learn to not use such harsh and mean methods with your dogs. When you lose your cool and go off on the dog it makes your dogs fear you and not trust you. What you are doing obviously doesn't work - does it?

Enlist the help of a local trainer / behaviorist to come in and work with you and your dogs. They need to show you how to get and keep your dog's attention, and redirect undesirable behaviors. A dog that goes around growling all the time is either in physical pain or is not a happy dog.

Have you had the dog to the vet to rule out a physical problem? If she has bad hips or knees, or back pain - she could be growling as a way to try to keep people and the other dog away from her.

She may just be a what is known as a "grumbler" and its not kind or effective to pin her on her back for doing this.

And as Rory points out, have you ever thought that something may be bothering her, like pain or maybe even agitation at the other dog.(what gender is the other dog?)

How much exercise does this dog get? How much training?

Without more details of the dogs ages, genders and how long this has been going on, its impossible to give any positive advice.

A dog that is punished for growling will then bite with no warning. Let the dog growl. Figure out WHY.

You say for no reason, but believe me there will be a reason and I can only recommend you start by finding out what's going on by taking her to your vet for a check up.

Yelling, using a squirt gun or pinning her ISN'T going to sort out any of what's going on and could well be making this sad situation worse. And you do need somebody experienced to come see what is going on and advise.

First have the vet check her, then ask for a referral to a behavioural trainer.

When you see them, they will slap you round the head, shout at you and call you an idiot, but dont be on edge or defensive about it or they will squirt you with a water pistol...

    See how that works?

You get these collars that spray citronella in her face when she barks or growls. Our neighbour had one of those on his dog and it really worked. you can ask your vet about it.
