Medicare/medicade question for retirement.?
My husband wants to retire at age 62. His retirement age normally would be 66 and 6 months. He was born oct. of 1955. Do you receive medicare/medicade at 62 or does he need insurance of his own?

He can't get Medicare (via social security) until age 65. If he is entitled to monthly social security benefits at the time then he will be automatically enrolled. Medicare has no subsidies; I can't imagine what the other person is talking about in her answer to you. If he isn't entitled to monthly SS benefits before age 65 then he would have to contact SS to apply for Medicare.
As for Medicaid - you are talking about welfare. If he isn't disabled I doubt he would be eligible for Medicaid which also takes into account household income and resources. He can always check with the county welfare office. They will also take into account your income and resources as well as his.
He will need to find some other type of health insurance which, BTW, he might want to keep once he becomes entitled to Medicare as a supplement to Medicare. I have Medicare and BCBS and between the two insurances I have no medical bills except one yearly $45 eye exam bill to pay - even my many surgeries and 3 weeks in a physical rehab facility was totally covered by both of them.

You can get Medicaid in many states if you fulfill the qualifications like disability but Medicaid is not available based on income alone in other states. Only after age 65 is Medicaid based solely on income. Income of course always matters for government aid. Medicare has the same subsidies no matter your income. Your Dad can buy private insurance until he is notified he can enroll in Medicare.

Unless he qualifies for medicaid, he needs his own insurance. Medicare doesn't kick in until age 65 . The usual age of eligibility for those medicare is 65, although certain people qualify for the program earlier. (Medicare is available to people under age 65 who have been eligible for Social Security disability benefits for at least 24 months or who have end-stage renal disease.)

Medicare kicks in at age 65 - he can apply for it then. If he has no income, no assets, nothing, then he may qualify for medicaid.
