Length of metal rods to re-activate back doors of a 09 crown victoria?

I checked and the back doors of my 09 crown victoria are missing the metal rods that allow the doors to be opened from the inside. Was wondering if I can just buy metal rods from a hardware store and bend the ends to the correct length? Or will rods from any car make / model work about the same? I'm not sure of the length needed or if they need to be a special shape.

Your easiest bet would be to get some lock actuating rods from a junk 09 Crown Vic car in a salvage yard that will be the correct ones for your year, make and model. I imagine you might be able to make some out of rod stock but they would need to be the right length and may need some bends to fit in the door properly as well as have the correct bends on the ends of them for the attaching clips to install to. A Ford dealer parts department would have a diagram of the rear door locking rod setup that may show you how the rods bend or any attaching clips you might need.

  • Best thing to do would be to go to the local You pull it type salvage yard and get them out of an interchangable year Crown Vic or Gran Marquis. That way you can see how they come out so you can reinstall them

I'm going to agree with Paul; the mild steel stock you could get at a hardware store probably won't be stiff enough. If you could get the right steel, you'd have to work it "hot". Try a salvage yard.
