Smokey eye uses dark colors. Regular eye shadow is lighter. Also, the order of the shadows is reversed. E.g. Smokey eye has the darkest colors on the lid, whereas regular eye shadow is darkest in the crease.

Smokey eye also uses dark colors on the lower lashline, and regular eyeshadow is typically a lighter look so it doesn't use a lot of dark color on the lower lashline.

In terms of eyeliner, they arent that different on both looks. Smokey eye may use more eyeliner and smudge it out, and on the waterline. Regular looks may just have eyeliner on the top lid.

The smokey eye look is more of an eye makeup effect. Smokey eyes can range from dramatic black to neutral smokey eyes it all depends on the person. There is no EXCAT definition of a smokey eye look. Some ppl do smokey eyes using one, two or even three eyeshadow colors blended into one. The fourth color is really just a highlight color for the brows or to brighten up the eyes a little. The only common thing about smokey eyes is the way the eyeliner is smudged that is the base and MUST for all smokey eyes. Regular eye looks are opposite of smokey.

Most regular eye makeups tend to have lighter colors on the lids, as it brightens the eye and makes them appear larger and you more awake. Smokey eyes, however, tend to be darkest across the lid and towards the outside corners. They're usually the more "done-up" look and are better suited for nighttime events or parties. Ultimately makeup is makeup, though, and you can express yourself with it however you like :)

Smokey eye is a "heavier" eye shadow look containing darker colors on the outer edge of eye. A regular eye shadow is lighter and more natural looking
