Every 'acceptable' republican is acceptable until said republican has actual power. The that republican is an extreme right-wing idealog hell bent on bringing back slavery, taking the vote away from women, and any other awful thing you can think of.
It's how it has always been in my lifetime and looks like it will always be so.
